Description
About Toothpaste: Toothpaste is a paste or gel that is used with a toothbrush to clean the teeth and maintain dental health. Toothpaste is used to promote oral health: it helps remove dental plaque and food from the teeth, helps suppress bad breath, and provides active ingredients (mostly fluoride) to prevent tooth decay and gum disease (gingivitis). Substitutes for commercial toothpaste include salt and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Swallowing large amounts of toothpaste can be toxic.
Functionality: A 2016 systematic review indicated that the use of toothpaste while brushing did not contribute to plaque removal.
Materials: Apart from 20% to 42% water, toothpaste contains various ingredients. The three main ones are polishes, fluorides and detergents.
